5G CF prices to remain stable through year-end, says Sintek chairman

Prices for fifth-generation (5G) color filters (CFs) are expected to remain stable through the end of the year although demand will remain tight, according to Sintek Photronic chairman Wen-yi Chang. Chang said 5G CF prices already rose 12% in the first quarter, and the current levels are reasonable. Although supply from CF specialists is more expensive than LCD panel makers' in-house CF production, the current prices are still acceptable to panel makers. He said 5G CF prices are likely to stay flat or rise 2-3% at most through the end of the year. The Sintek chairman also predicts tight supply of 3.5G and 4G CFs in the second quarter because of reduced supply. Sintek has announced a plan to sell its 3.5G and 4G CF plants to Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT). Chang revealed that utilization at the two plants has decreased to 40% in preparation for handover to CPT in July. Sintek's clients are not being seriously affected by the sales of the plants, as the second quarter is a traditionally a slow season, he said.
