Over 90% of Radiant notebook BLUs to be LED by end of 2009

Taiwan-based Radiant Opto-Electronics expects LED backlight units (BLUs) to account for over 90% of its total notebook BLU shipments by the end of 2009, according to the company. The current notebook LED BLU share is about 80%, the company noted. Radiant is also developing edge-type TV and monitor LED BLUs, expecting to start shipping to the 32- and 27-inch TV segments in small quantities later in 2009, with volume shipment beginning in the second quarter of 2010, the company noted. In 2008, shipments to Taiwan and Korea panel makers accounted for about 70% and 30% respectively of Radiant's total notebook BLU output, market sources said, noting that panel makers in the two countries will equally split Radiant's notebook BLU shipments, as Korea clients have better utilization rates this year. Another Taiwan-based BLU maker Coretronic expects LED BLUs to account for 80-90% of its total output for the notebook segment in the third quarter, the sources noted. LED BLU shipments accounted for 40% of Coretronic's total notebook BLU shipments in the first quarter and 70% in the second, the sources added. Coretronic expects to start shipping monitor LED BLUs in the third quarter.
